To the Core

Jesmonite and AR app

To the Core is a tactile and handmade Jesmonite sculpture carved with geometric patterns that encode data relating to the decline of native British Species. The piece explores what we can do to support biodiversity in our communities.

Accessed and decoded through an accompanying Augmented Reality app, it lets you tap into the work – and a world of information – in an engaging and interactive way, bringing data to life.

This sculpture looks at new ways of storing, recording and interacting with important environmental data. The unique geometric patterns are hand-produced, visual translations of data relating to the decline of native flora and fauna. The artwork also explores what we can do to support biodiversity in our communities at a realistic and achievable scale, perhaps in a window box or at school.

This work was exhibited at the National Museum of Scotland for Creative Informatic’s showcase, ‘Unleashing the Power of Data’ at Edinburgh Science Festival.

Supported by Creative Informatics as part of its Connected Innovators programme.
