Liver Model 1 for Antarctic Krill

Handmade bronze cast medal with patina

This medal was commissioned by the British Art Medal Society to take part as one of seven artists celebrating the thirtieth year of the BAMS Student Medal Project in 2023, sponsored by a Goldsmiths’ Centre grant.

It is inspired by Mesopotamian liver models used for divination. Bringing together the form of these earliest divination tools, the piece is embedded with contemporary environmental data that has been translated into unique geometric sequences and stored in the surface. The data encoded in this piece reflects the projected future decline of Antarctic Krill. The hybridisation of ancient divination tool and contemporary data questions the future for the natural world and the uncertainty faced.
