Kate created this handmade bronze animal art medal whilst on residency in Bulgaria.

Kate was selected as the British Art Medal Society’s ‘New Medallist’. The award is run by BAMS in collaboration with the British Museum, V&A, Royal Mint and National Academy of Art Sofia, Bulgaria. Kate spent 1 month at the National Academy in Bulgaria, where she created this art medal.

Inspired by her surroundings, Kate created this art medal with a focus on mark making. Beginning with a plaster disc, Kate hand carved in these fine details experimenting with different depths and relief detail. She created this abstract image of a Bird of Paradise which wraps around the two sides of the medal. This was then cast in bronze and patinated with a blue/brown patina.
